You Didn’t Miss It!
To end the season, I have a special tribute to someone who has been an integral part of the kickball community for quite some time. And the title of it will be a bit ironic considering the title of this section of the GMOT.
You DID Miss it...
The Girl Who Kicked (Ass)
Perhaps her parents didn't know it when they named her, but
her initials predestined her for kickball glory.
V. A. G.
Called the “Power VAG” in her early days, she was known for
rocking yellow tights & a cape. Her
antics were known by many, but understood by few. Valerie’s first foray into WAKA kickball with
“40 Bounces to Freedom” gave her a taste of something she could grow to love,
even though the team name was so terrible it made anyone who heard it gag.
And a love grew indeed.
Over 24 more seasons, Valerie blessed the WAKA leagues with her
brilliant GMOTs, her creepy power humps, and her undeniably badass skillz &
personality. She took on titles such as
Live President, Candy Van Captain, GMOT Czar, and even found herself employed
by WAKA for a short stint.
I’ve been lucky enough to call her my teammate for 14 of
those 24 seasons, and been mistaken for her brother on thousands of
occasions. In my time with Valerie, we’ve
won league titles, travel tourneys, Titanium Necklaces, money, and even
competed in the Founders Cup Nationals together. While I will feign outrage at the idea of
being related to her, I consider it an honor to have shared so many moments
& memories with my fake sister.
When (and yes, I said “when” not “if”) she comes back, like
Jordan, or Jay-Z, or Arrested Development, I hope the 2nd chapter is
as good as the first. If it’s anywhere
close, we should all be terrified.
Happy sailing, Valerie.
We’ll miss you out at the fields, but you’ll always be in our
hearts. And probably playing some nerdy
trivia game with us somewhere.
